Purpose and Vision

What is Chi Alpha?

Chi Alpha is an interdenominational collegiate ministry committed to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ on university and college campuses. Our primary purpose is to help others to believe on the Lord Jesus so that they might have eternal life with God! Chi Alpha takes its name from 2 Corinthians 5:20 where Paul says that we are Christ's Ambassadors.  Here the Greek words are Christou apostoloi, meaning Christ's sent ones.

Mission Statement

By the power of the Holy Spirit

we love God, love one another,

and minister the gospel of our

Lord Jesus Christ to the nations.

Our mission is to help fulfill the Great Commission on the secular university campus.  The Great Commission is found in Matthew 28:18-20 and records the Lord Jesus commanding His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations because He has all authority and power!  We are to baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and teach them to obey all that the Lord Jesus has commanded.  We are under the Lord’s authority to share the love of God so that students will not perish but have everlasting life through the finished work of Christ Jesus.  Our purpose is to turn people from darkness to light, from the dominion of satan to God so that they can come to know and enjoy fellowship with God and with fellow believers.  All that we do is done for the purpose of helping the student know the love of God in Christ so they can be filled to all the fullness of God.  This will be accomplished not by our might or power, but by the Spirit of the LORD GOD!

Ministry Perspective

By the grace and calling of God, it is our utmost desire to know the love of Christ Jesus, be filled with His fullness and help others come to know and experience the awesome love of God by the power of the Holy Spirit!  Ministry is extremely challenging and rewarding.  There are multitudes of people who are broken and controlled by an array of bondages; existing in seemingly hopeless circumstances. The Lord has called us to help turn those in darkness to the light, from Satan to God so that they might have an eternal inheritance through Christ Jesus and be filled with the Spirit of Life!

We emphasize the power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish what only God can do for it is all by grace through the redemption of the Lord Jesus for the glory of God!  In the context of proclaiming the word of God, we primarily practice an exegetical style of teaching/preaching in order for spiritual understanding and growth to take place in the hearts of the hearers.  Knowing the love of God by the anointing of the Spirit and having fellowship with Him and with one another is the main objective behind everything we are and do.

Ministry Focus

A few verses that describe our focus of ministry are:

  1. Acts 5:42, “Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah” (NIV).

  2. Acts 1:8, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit come on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (NIV).

  3. Galatians 5:16-17, “So I say, walk by the Sprit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.  For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want” (NIV).

  4. I John 4:15-16, “If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God.  And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.  God is love.  Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them” (NIV).

  5. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5, “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.  The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world.  On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (NIV).

The focus of our campus ministry and wherever the Holy Spirit leads us, will be teaching about the Lord Jesus and praying for converts to be filled and empowered with the Holy Spirit.  Living by the Spirit will be emphasized for it is only by His power through Christ we can overcome sinful desires.  The rewarding objective for any believer is knowing the love of God!  This is where the satisfied life begins!  As the Holy Spirit roots us in the love of God, then we are prepared to use God’s weapons to demolish evil strongholds so others can be free to receive God’s salvation in Christ!

Vision of Chi Alpha Ministry

As students are saved by the power of God, the objective is to place them into small groups of not more than a dozen per group for effectual discipleship, having one leader per 12 students.  Each leader trains up more student leaders from his/her group, following the model of the Lord Jesus and His disciples.

The following examples of ministry represent the godly vision we have for Chi Alpha ministry locally and to the nations:

  1. Each small group would be trained to be an intercessory prayer group.

  2. Five worship teams (5- 10 members) for on campus ministry and outside ministry

  3. Multiple ministry units, 7-12 students per unit

    • Each member living and led by the Spirit, to minister as He leads for salvation, deliverance and edification.

    • Demolishing strongholds of evil through intercession, worship, power of the Gospel, prayer and righteousness and reconciling people to God the Father through the finished work of Christ under the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

    • Edifying other Chi Alpha groups, pastors and congregations where the Holy Spirit leads.

    • 2 - 100 voice choirs for worship on campus and abroad

  4. Small Groups;  some examples of some topics regarding discipleship:

    • Teach them how and what to pray

    • Systematic study of the Scriptures

    • Knowledge of God, His nature and plan for Man

    • Life of Christ

    • The Holy Spirit and spiritual gifts

    • Living the New Life

    • Spiritual warfare

    • Overcoming sinful desires

    • Memorize Scripture
